가운데 나무 한 그루가 서 있다. 가지는 모두 한쪽으로 기울어, 보이지 않는 바람의
방향을 드러낸다. 지금 바람이 불지 않아도, 그 기욺이 지나간 모든 바람을 말한다.
그 아래 언덕에 말 한 마리와 웅크린 사람 하나가 있다.
둘은 가까이 있으나 말을 건네지 않는다. 말은 달릴 수 있으나 달리지 않고, 사람은
일어설 수 있으나 일어서지 않는다. 떠날 수 있는데 머무는 것. 그것이 동무의
마음이다.
멀리 수평선 아래로 작은 배 한 척이 지나가고, 새 한 마리가 낮게 난다. 하늘도
바다도 같은 빛에 잠겨 있다.
이 그림의 사람과 말은 같은 바람을 맞고, 같은 자리에 머물며, 같이 굽어 있다.
서로를 설명하지 않는다. 다만 한 풍토 안에서 같이 견딜 뿐이다.
대화는 입으로만 이루어지지 않는다.
같은 바람을 함께 맞는 일. 같은 침묵을 함께 지나는 일.
말이 없어도, 그것이 대화다.
어쩌면 가장 깊은 대화는, 말이 없는 대화다.

The whole surface is the color of dry grass.
In the center stands a single tree. Its branches all lean to one side, revealing the
direction of an unseen wind.
On the hill below are a horse and a crouching figure.
The two are near each other, yet they exchange no words. But the silence is not
empty.
Far off, beneath the horizon, a small boat passes, and a bird flies low. Sky and sea
alike lie quietly steeped in the same light.
For Watsuji, Fūdo was not an environment outside human life, but a way in which
human beings come to discover themselves.
What this painting shows is no different.
The figure and the horse receive the same wind, remain in the same place, and
bend under it in the same way.
They do not explain each other. They only endure together in the same Fūdo, and
stand together.
Dialogue is not made of words alone.
To stand in the same wind together, to pass through the same silence together —
that too is dialogue.
Even without words, it is dialogue.
