사내는 이미
정상을 지났다.
정상에서 무엇을 보았는지
그는 말하지 않는다.
다만 모든 것을 등 뒤에 두고
천천히 능선을 내려온다.
오르는 자의 굽은 등은
아직 닿지 못한 곳을 향한
안간힘이다.
그러나 내려오는 자의 굽은 등은
이미 다 본 사람이
짊어진 무게다.
오름의 정상은
머물기 위한 자리가 아니었다.
사내는 그곳을 지나
다시 흙으로 내려선다.
높이 오르는 일은
삶의 전부가 아니다.
본 것을 품고,
얻은 것을 내려놓고,
다시 낮은 자리로 돌아오는 것.
오름은 그때
내림으로 완성된다.
내려오는 등 뒤에서
정상은 말없이
그를 배웅한다.

The man has already
passed the summit.
What he saw at the summit,
he does not say.
He only leaves everything behind
and slowly comes down the ridge.
The bent back of the one ascending
is a straining
toward a place not yet reached.
But the bent back of the one descending
is the weight borne
by one who has already seen all.
The summit of the oreum
was not a place to stay.
The man passes it
and steps down again to the earth.
To climb high
is not the whole of life.
To hold what one has seen,
to set down what one has gained,
and to return again to the low place.
The ascent, then,
is completed by the descent.
