넓은 바다에 흰 물결이 들이친다.
검은 절벽은 바다로 머리를 내밀고, 그 위 능선에 말 한 마리와 나무들이 줄지어 섰다.
절벽 사이로 흰 물줄기 하나 흘러내리고, 멀리 한라산이 낮게 솟았다.
오른쪽 물가에는 사람 하나가 작게 웅크렸다.
바람을 대하는 길은 둘이다. 맞서거나, 함께 가거나.
곧추선 것은 먼저 부러진다. 능선의 나무들은 바람을 따라 함께 눕는다. 그들은 지는
것이 아니라, 사는 쪽을 택한 것이다.
웅크린 사람 역시 그렇다. 웅크림은 부끄러운 자세가 아니다. 큰 나무는 부러져도,
웅크린 것은 살아남는다.
견딤은 바람을 이기는 일이 아니다. 부러지지 않을 만큼 함께 휘는 일이다.
그렇게 휘어서, 끝내 남는다.

White waves come driving into the wide sea.
A black cliff thrusts its head toward the sea, and on the ridge above it a horse and a
row of trees stand.
Between the cliffs a single white stream pours down, and far off Hallasan rises low.
On the right shore a person crouches small.
There are two ways to face the wind: to stand against it, or to go with it.
What stands upright breaks first.
The trees on the ridge lie down together, following the wind.
To endure is not to defeat the wind, but perhaps to bend together just enough not
to break.
