바람이
한 그루 나무를 다 기울였다.
가지도 잎도
모두 한쪽으로 쏠렸다.
들풀은
흰 줄이 되어 눕는다.
한 포기도 거스르지 않고
같은 쪽으로.
말 한 마리와
노인 한 사람이
서로 몸을 가까이한 채 서 있다.
말의 온기가 사람에게 건너가고,
사람의 손이 말의 목에 얹힌다.
초가 한 채는
돌담 안에 몸을 낮춘다.
눕는 것은
지는 것이 아니다.
바람에 몸을 맡기는 법이다.
풀은 눕고
나무는 휜다.
노인은 말의 곁에서
끝내 발을 땅에 붙인다.
바람이 멎으면
풀은 다시 일어난다.
한 포기도 빠짐없이,
누웠던 그 자리에서.
견딘다는 것은
쓰러지지 않는 일이 아니라,
다시 일어날 힘을
땅에 남겨두는 일.

has bent a single tree all the way to one side.
Branch and leaf alike
are swept to one side.
The wild grass
lies down as a white streak.
Not one blade resisting,
all to the same side.
A horse
and an old man
stand close to one another.
A single thatched house
lowers itself within the stone wall.
To lie down
is not to lose.
It is a way of giving the body to the wind.
The grass lies down
and the tree bends.
The old man, beside the horse,
keeps his feet on the earth in the end.
When the wind stops,
the grass rises again.
To endure
is not to keep from falling,
but to leave in the earth
the strength to rise again.
