산방산이 둥근 것도, 노인의 등이 굽은 것도, 오래 견뎠기 때문이다.
말의 숙인 목과 낮게 엎드린 초가, 서로 몸을 기댄 돌담도 그렇다.
자기 자리에서 자기 방식으로 견딘 시간이 쌓여, 저마다의 모양이 된다.
견딘 만큼 모양이 생긴다.
모양은 겉으로 드러난 생김새가 아니다. 한 존재가 자기에게 불어온 세계를 받아내며
오래 살아온 방식이다.
모양은 견딘 시간의 자국이다.
그러니 굽고 닳고 둥글어진 것들 앞에서는 잠시 조용해질 일이다. 그 모양이
만들어지는 데, 한 생애가 걸렸다.

The time endured in one's own place, in one's own way, gathers and becomes each
being's shape.
That Mount Sanbang is round,
and that the old man's back is bent — it is because both have endured for so long.
So too the horse's lowered neck, the thatched house lying low, and the stone walls
leaning on one another.
As much as one endures, a shape comes into being.
Shape is not the outward appearance.
It is the way a being has long lived, receiving the world that has blown against it.
Shape is the mark of endured time.
