하늘 높은 곳에 해 하나가 떠 있다. 멀리 바다에는 배 한 척. 가운데에는 오래
움직이지 않은 바위섬. 그 비탈에는 말 한 마리가 혼자 서 있다.
아래에는 집이 둘이다. 한 집은 문을 닫고 지나간 날들을 품고 있다. 다른 집은 안을
비운 채 아직 오지 않은 사람을 기다린다.
두 집을 두른 돌담은 서로 이어지다가 갈라지고, 막아선 듯하다가 다시 길을
내어준다.
그 사이로 노인 하나가 지팡이를 짚고 걸어온다.
해는 떠 있고, 바위는 머물고, 말은 기다리고, 집은 비어 있다.
오직 노인만이 걷는다.
어느 집이 옳은지는 아무도 말해주지 않는다. 닫힌 문 안에도 삶이 있고, 열린 빈방
안에도 아직 살아보지 않은 시간이 있다.
노인은 갈림길 앞에 선다. 그러나 길은 처음부터 길이었던 것이 아니다.
그가 한쪽으로 몸을 옮기는 순간, 한 줄의 길이 생기고, 빈집 하나가 비로소 그의
거처가 된다.
삶은 주어진 답을 찾는 일이 아니다. 두 집 사이 비어 있는 자리 하나를 골라 자기의
온기로 채워가는 일이다.

Empty House on the Left, Empty House on the
Right
High in the sky, a single sun is afloat. Far out at sea, a small boat. In the middle, a
rocky islet that has long stayed still. On its slope, a horse stands alone.
Below, there are two houses. One has shut its door and holds the days that have
passed. The other, empty inside, waits for someone not yet come.
The stone walls around the two houses join and part, seem to block the way, then
open it again.
Between them, an old figure comes walking, leaning on a staff.
The sun is in the sky, the rock remains, the horse waits, the houses are empty.
Only the old figure walks.
No one tells them which house is right. Behind the closed door, there is life. Inside
the open, empty room, there is time not yet lived.
The old figure stands before a fork in the road. But a road is not a road from the
beginning.
The moment they move their body to one side, a single line becomes a path, and
one empty house at last becomes their dwelling.
Perhaps life is not finding an answer already given, but choosing one empty place
between two houses and filling it, little by little, with one's own warmth.
