편지는 닿을 수 없는 사람에게 마음을 보내는 일이다.
사람은 땅에 남아 글을 쓰고, 조각배는 그 마음을 싣고 먼 바다로 간다.
답장은 오지 않을 것이다. 그는 안다. 그래도 쓴다.
편지를 쓰는 동안은 떠난 이에게 아직 말을 건네는 중이다. 그 이름을 부르고,
지난날을 떠올리고, 하지 못한 말을 적는다.
떠난 이는 돌아오지 않는다. 그러나 말을 건네는 동안만큼은, 마음속에서 다시 마주
앉은 사람이 된다.
그래서 그는 쓴다.
그 사람과 나눈 시간을, 아직 잃지 않기 위해서.

A letter is a way of sending the heart to someone who cannot be reached. The
person remains on land and writes, and the small boat carries that heart out to the
far sea. No reply will come. He knows this. Still, he writes. While he writes the letter,
he is still speaking to the one who left. He calls that name, recalls the days gone by,
and sets down the words he could not say. The one who left does not return. Yet for
as long as he keeps speaking, that person becomes, in his heart, someone seated
before him once more. And so he writes. So as not to lose, not yet, the time he
shared with that person.
