마른 풀잎색 바다가 화면 가득 기울어 있다.
멀리 왼편에 조각배 한 척이 점처럼 흔들린다.
그러나 흔들리는 것은 배만이 아니다.
검은 물결도 흔들리고, 언덕 위 초가도 흔들리고,
말과 사람의 마음도 같은 바람 안에서 흔들린다.
배는 바다에 있고, 사람과 말은 뭍에 있다.
서로 다른 자리에 있으나, 하나의 불안 속에 있다.
사람은 배를 붙잡을 수 없고,
말은 그 흔들림을 멈출 수 없다.
할 수 있는 일이 없다.
그래서 하는 일이 하나 남는다.
바라보는 일이다.
초가는 몸을 낮추고,
말은 사람 곁에 서고,
사람은 끝내 바다에서 눈을 거두지 않는다.
견딘다는 것은 흔들리지 않는 일이 아니다.
멀리 있는 존재의 흔들림을 제 마음 안에서 함께 견디며,
끝내 시선을 거두지 않는 일이다.
흔들리는 조각배는 바다 위의 작은 배이면서,
사람 안에서 흔들리는 하나의 삶이다.
세상은 넓고 배는 작다.
그러나 그 작은 존재 하나 때문에,
뭍의 모든 것이 조용히 숨을 죽인다.

A sea the color of dry grass tilts, filling the whole surface.
Far to the left, a single skiff trembles like a dot.
But it is not only the boat that trembles.
The black waves tremble, the thatched house on the hill trembles,
and the hearts of the horse and the person tremble within the same wind.
The boat is on the sea, the person and the horse are on land.
They are in different places, yet within the same unease.
The person cannot hold the boat,
and the horse cannot stop that trembling.
The thatched house merely lowers itself,
the horse stands beside the person,
and the person, in the end, gazes at the sea.
To endure is not to keep from trembling.
It is to bear, within one's own heart, the trembling of a being far away,
and in the end not to turn one's eyes away.
The wavering skiff is a small boat upon the sea,
and also a single life that wavers within a person.
The world is wide and the boat is small.
Yet because of that one small being,
everything on land quietly holds its breath.
