The Sea of Jeju

The whole painting
is a sea the color of dried grass.
Far to the left,
a small boat.
At the end of the black cape on the right,
a person stands.
The boat is small,
and the person is small.
Between them
the sea lies without end.
Would a call reach?
The wind carries the sound away.
Would a wave of the hand be seen?
Distance erases the gesture.
But the sea
is not water that divides them.
The heart watching the one who has left
and the heart remembering where to return
meet upon that wide water.
To be in the same sea,
even when they cannot reach each other.
That is how
this sea joins them.
Between those who leave and those who stay,
there is always a sea like this.
