In Memoriam

Under a yellow sky, a thatched house, a tree, a horse, and a person remain in one place.

The house is low. Jeju's wind strikes what stands tall, so the house lies low against the earth. It settles in rather than ruling over it.

The stooped person lingers within the stone wall. The wall does not block the wind. It lets the wind pass through its gaps, and so does not fall.

The person in this painting, too, does not occupy the place, but becomes part of it. Dwelling is not a place to live, but a posture for enduring the world.

Read this way, the title appears anew. To remain, in the same posture, where someone who has gone once stayed. Perhaps that is what it means to remember them.
