A field the color of dry grass.
A place the wind has long passed through.
A person stands there.
The robe is long, the feet are bare.
Walking, he stopped.
The wind called him a beggar.
But he is not one who came to beg.
He is one who has passed through wind and cloud.
He has nothing.
He has nothing to lose.
And so he is light.
A man of wind and cloud.
Standing in the empty field, he still gazes somewhere far off.
Key context
Byun Shi-Ji was a Korean modern and contemporary painter who treated Jeju’s Fūdo not as scenery but as a condition of existence. Through solitude, waiting, wind and the colour of dried grass, his art formed a glocal modernism rooted in Korea and open to the world.
