A Wavering Horizon

On the land
are an old man and a horse,
and on the sea
a single small boat.
In different places,
they endure the same wind.
The two shadows on the cliff
become a place for the boat to return,
and the small boat among the waves
becomes, for the old man,
the hope that still remains.
They cannot reach one another.
They cannot even call out.
The wind erases sound.

Still they look.
As long as they look,
they are not alone.
To endure
is not to hold out alone.
One distant presence
is still there.
That alone
lets a person endure another day.
