눈은 정면을 보지 않는다. 무언가를 바라보면서도, 여기가 아닌 먼 곳을 향한다.
그 눈에는 아직 말하지 못한 꿈과 젊은 날의 슬픔이 함께 있다. 입술은 굳게 닫혀
있지만, 그 안에는 앞으로 그려야 할 수많은 말이 숨어 있다.
낯선 땅에서 그는 자기 얼굴을 가만히 들여다본다. 떠나온 곳과 아직 닿지 못한 곳
사이에서, 붓으로 자신을 세운다.
그가 그린 것은 젊은 날의 외모가 아니다. 세상 속에 홀로 던져진 자기 존재의 첫
얼굴이다.
그리움은 이미, 비껴간 눈빛 속에서 시작되었다.
이 얼굴이 먼 훗날 빈 들에 홀로 선 노인이 되리라는 것을, 그때 그는 알지 못했다.
다만 눈은 벌써, 그 먼 곳을 보고 있었다.

1944 — Japan years — essay
A young face floats before a dark ground.
Hair combed back, a black suit, a tie slightly askew.
The eyes do not look straight ahead. Gazing at something, they turn toward a far
place that is not here.
In those eyes are dreams not yet spoken and the sorrow of youth, together.
The lips are firmly closed, but behind them lie countless words yet to be painted.
In a strange land, he quietly looks into his own face.
Between the place he has left and the place not yet reached, he sets himself upright
with the brush.
What he painted was not merely his youthful appearance.
It was the first face of his own being, thrown alone into the world.
Longing had already begun in that averted gaze.
