The Cow and the Calf

At forty-nine, he returned, and became a child again.

He had not returned to his hometown, but to his mother's embrace.

The field where his mother worked. The place where the calf followed its mother.

It is the warm afternoon light in which a child lingered close beside her.

Later, this light will grow drier.

The mother will leave, the field will stand empty, and the child will become an old man.

The same light will sink into the color of solitude.

But not yet.

Still, the mother is in the field, and he can cling to her side.
