The waves are high and the wind is fierce.

The thatched house grows lower, the tree loses a branch, and the horse bows its head. Each has lost something: the height of the roof, a branch, the upright bearing of the head. But all are still there.

Endurance is not holding out without wounds. It is giving oneself away little by little and yet not vanishing in the end.

The face of someone who has lived a long time is like that. It bears the marks of what has been lost, and between those marks the person is still there.
