A person and a horse
stop where the road runs out
and gaze at the horizon.
A place where one can go no farther,
and come no closer.
Perhaps longing is
to go as far as one can go,
to gaze as far as one can see,
and in the end to stop in one place.
The person and the horse do not turn back.
Only the heart that cannot reach
follows the sea
and goes beyond the horizon.
Key context
Byun Shi-Ji was a Korean modern and contemporary painter who treated Jeju’s Fūdo not as scenery but as a condition of existence. Through solitude, waiting, wind and the colour of dried grass, his art formed a glocal modernism rooted in Korea and open to the world.
