- LifeAt the age of six, moved to Japan with his father.
- EducationEntered Osaka Hanazono Higher Elementary School. Remembered as a versatile boy admired by his classmates. Strong for his age, he often wrestled with older students; an injury to his leg became one reason he chose art school on finishing his secondary course.
- AwardReceived the Osaka Mayor’s Award at the National Children’s Art Exhibition.
1941
- WorkPainted Still Life (41 × 32 cm), the earliest known work by the painter — at fifteen, the year after entering the Osaka School of Fine Arts.
- EducationEntered the Department of Western Painting, Osaka School of Fine Arts. His Korean classmates included Im Ho, Yun Jae-gan, Baek Yeong-su and Song Yeong-ok.
- ArtworkSurviving works from these years include the 1943 oil Farm House (F50), the 1944 Self-Portrait, and a 1945 Nude.

- AwardFEMME was accepted at the 3rd Nitten, the national exhibition organised by the Japanese Ministry of Education — the first Korean ever accepted into its Western painting section. He was twenty-one.
- AwardWon the highest award, the Kōfū Prize, at the 34th Kōfūkai Exhibition. At twenty-three he was its youngest recipient — an unprecedented event in the Japanese art world, reported by NHK as a topic of the week. The four submitted works were Woman in a Beret, Woman with a Mandolin, Early Spring and Autumn Landscape.

On canvas sizes — many works listed as F50 in fact measure 110 × 83 cm, smaller than the standard F50 (117 × 91). In a 2004 oral history the painter said he had ordered smaller canvases deliberately, so as not to admit anything unnecessary into the picture.
Corrections of date — five errors in the 1958 pamphlet have been corrected against the surviving paintings: No. 3 (1945→1944), No. 5 (one work→two, Winter Trees A and B), No. 10 (1948→1949), No. 12 (1949→1951), No. 21 (1953→1952).
On “Nitten, by invitation” — at the Kōfūkai he was a member and a juror; members are not juried, and their entries are recorded as kaiin shuppin (會員出品). The Nitten was an open competition: non-members had to pass its jury. Exemption from that jury was called mukansa (無鑑査); after the war the same standing was termed ishoku shuppin (依囑出品), “submission by invitation.” The 1958 Hwashin pamphlet joins the two terms in a single line.
