거친 파도가 절벽을 덮고, 작은 노인과 말이 바위 위에서 먼 배와 수평선을 바라본다. 육지와 바다는 서로 떨어져 있지만 같은 바람에 흔들린다.Rough waves cover the cliff as a tiny old man and horse look toward a distant boat and horizon; land and sea shake within the same wind.
1986년의 같은 제목이 흔들리는 세계 앞에 서는 자세를 물었다면, 2005년의 작품은 떨어진 존재들이 어떻게 서로의 버팀이 되는지를 묻는다.
노인과 말은 배에 닿을 수 없지만 육지는 배가 돌아갈 방향이 된다. 배도 노인에게 관계가 아직 끝나지 않았다는 가능성을 남긴다.
견딤은 가까이에서 몸을 맞대는 일만이 아니다. 멀리서 누군가 자신을 바라보고 있고 돌아갈 자리가 남아 있다는 사실이 삶을 계속하게 할 수 있다.
The later painting shifts from individual grounding to relation across distance. Land becomes a direction of return for the boat, while the boat keeps possibility alive for those on shore.
What supports us need not stand beside us. A distant gaze or place of return may become a reason to remain.
