이 아틀라스는 변시지를 ‘제주의 화가’라는 한 문장에 가두지 않습니다. 일본에서 배운 재현, 서울의 닫힌 정원, 쉰의 귀향, 마른 풀잎색과 검은 선, 말과 까마귀, 빈 배와 흔들리는 수평선이 어떻게 하나의 회화적 언어가 되었는지를 작품별로 살핍니다.
This atlas does not confine Byun Shi-Ji to the label “painter of Jeju.” It follows how representation learned in Japan, enclosed Seoul gardens, return at fifty, dried-grass colour, black line, horses, crows, empty boats and wavering horizons became a singular pictorial language.
