The Rock That Lifts Its Head
The Rock That Lifts Its Head · 1980

A rock
was looking at the sea.

Its tip

was raised a little,
like a lifted head.

Where the rock looked,
one small boat.

I
stood beside it.

The boat
slowly drew away.

The rock
did not move.

For a while
I did not move either.

The boat
grew smaller.

I
looked at my feet.

I could
take a step.

And another.

The boat
went farther.

Between the waves
it showed,
then did not.

I
turned around.

After a few steps
I looked back again.

The rock
was where it had been.

Head still lifted.

I
walked on
without looking again.

The rock left behind
was still
looking at the sea.
