STORY 29 · PART III · What Remains After Leaving

Still Not Untied

The Jetty · 1979

Text by Byun Joung Hoon

The Jetty
The Jetty · 1979

One black line
going into the sea.

It was a jetty.

At its end
a bundle had been set down.

Tied
tight.

Rain passed.

Sun passed.

The wind too
passed many times.

Summer went
and winter came.

The color of the cloth
faded.

And yet
the knot did not come undone.

I
looked a long time.

I thought
it would be good if it came undone.

Then
I stopped thinking even that.

At the other end of the line
a person
was sitting.

The bundle
did not move.

The person
did not leave either.

Between the two
only the wind passed.

While everything
dried a little at a time,
the knot
grew darker where it was.
