풍랑
Rough Sea
제주 풍토를 찾지 못해 술로 세월을 보내던 시절의 작품.
붓이 종이를 때린다. 황토색과 먹이 충돌한다. 이것은 기법이 아니라 울부짖음이었다. 새로운 언어를 찾는 고통, 자신이 무엇인지 모르는 고통이 이 풍랑이 되었다.
그러나 폭풍 속에서도 형태는 있었다. 무너지지 않는 선이 있었다. 그것이 변시지가 이 시기를 버텨낸 방식이었다. 풍랑은 끝이 아니라 과정이었다.

A work from the period when he drank his years away, unable to find Jeju's spirit.
The brush strikes the paper. Ochre and ink collide. This was not technique — it was a cry. The agony of seeking a new language, the agony of not knowing what he was, became this rough sea.
Yet even within the storm, there was form. A line that did not collapse. That was how Byun Shi-Ji endured this period. The rough sea was not an ending, but a passage.
