Secret Garden of Autumn
English
Short, broken brushstrokes. Impressionist in manner, but different in purpose.
Where Western Impressionism sought to capture the instant of light, Byun Shi-Ji sought to hold the accumulation of time. The autumn colors of Biwon were made not in a day but over hundreds of years. He layered that depth with short strokes.
The point where impression and realism interlock. A canvas where the free brush and precise structure coexist. This was the completion of what is called Byun Shi-Ji's "Biwon style" — his Seoul era at its peak.
