Between the red jacket and the blue beret,
that face was postwar Japan itself.
A gaze on the threshold of decision,
a posture seated in shadow—
what was ambiguous was not the emotion
but the age, not yet decided.
The painter did not ask her
which she would choose.
He only fixed that tension
inside eternity.
