겨울나무 A
Winter Tree A

First prize at the Kōfūkai Exhibition. Twenty-one years old.
Bare winter trees standing before the old University building. The skeletal branches reach toward the sky, but the painter did not paint the sky. He blocked the upward gaze and demanded attention to the trees alone.
This was already Byun Shi-Ji — eliminating the unnecessary, speaking everything with only what remains. Even in the cold winter, warm yellow light crossed between the branches. An end that was a beginning. A defeat that was a new era.
The trees knew. Spring comes. You must pass through winter.
