A horse.

Behind it
a man

was leaning
his body forward.

When the horse
took a step,

the man took a step too.

The horse's feet.

The man's feet.

On the soil
they moved together.

Between them

a line was stretched taut.

I

tried to paint the next step.

My fingers
would not move well.

I took
a fresh grip on the brush.

The tip of the brush

had not yet touched the canvas.

“Just stay
today.”

I said it

to the horse with its head down.

I put down the brush.

The horse and the man

stayed where they were.

The line between them did not break.

The brush
lay beside me,

but my fingers were still

bent
in the shape of holding it.
