거센 바람에 나무가 한쪽으로 휘고, 그 아래 작은 사람이 땅 가까이 몸을 웅크린다. 까마귀와 먼 배가 넓은 여백 속에 흩어져 있다.A tree bends in strong wind above a small crouching person, while a crow and distant boat are scattered through broad empty space.
나무는 자리를 떠날 수 없기에 뿌리내린 곳에서 바람을 받아야 한다. 그러나 정면으로 맞서기보다 형태의 일부를 내어주며 휜 만큼 살아남는다.
휘어짐은 패배가 아니다. 바람이 남긴 흔적이면서 동시에 그 바람을 통과해온 생명의 시간이다. 아래의 작은 사람도 몸을 낮춤으로써 같은 조건을 견딘다.
고독은 아무도 곁에 없다는 감정만이 아니라 누구도 대신 맞아줄 수 없는 바람을 자기 몸으로 지나야 하는 조건이다. 그럼에도 나무의 끝은 하늘의 방향을 잊지 않는다.
The tree cannot leave the place where it is rooted. It survives by yielding part of its form rather than opposing the wind rigidly.
Its curvature records both the force that struck it and the life that continued. Solitude is the condition of receiving a wind no other being can endure in one’s place, without losing all direction toward the sky.
