Young Man
남자
Red wine bottles fill the shelves,
and the young man sits quietly before them.
Last night has not yet disappeared,
and today has not yet arrived.
He is suspended in the gap between times.
The light is brilliant.
Yet that light has no subject.
The white shirt reflects it.
Not the body, but the surface shines.
A city of defeat. An order of occupation.
The familiar things have collapsed and scattered,
and the new regime fills his chest
with an unfamiliar language.
He learned in that language
and was praised in that language.
But the praise was not his.
It touched only the surface,
never finding its way inside.
Books beneath wine,
intellect beneath intoxication.
The hands remember how to paint,
but the will has not yet taken form.
Not to paint
is not incapacity.
When the ground beneath your feet
will never quite become your own,
the body knows it first.
Between the wine bottles and the books,
between home and a foreign land,
between a name and the place
that name was meant to stand —
he belongs to neither side.
Neither side calls him whole.
It was not that the road was lost.
From the beginning,
there was no road
that had been given to him.
