Woman with Mandolin
The music cannot be heard. Yet the brushstrokes and colors convey its resonance visually.
The mandolin is a Western instrument. But the painter did not depict it as something foreign. Under her fingertips, the mandolin had already become hers. Her gaze does not turn outward. It remains absorbed, entirely, in the instrument and in herself.
In postwar Japan, a Korean painter painted a Japanese woman. Nationality, ethnicity, victory, defeat — none of it mattered inside this painting. There was only music, and interiority.
