Island Woman

섬의 여인

Island Woman. No face.

Byun Shi-Ji's figures often hide their faces. Not to erase the individual — but to reveal the universal. This woman is not any particular Jeju woman. She is every woman who has lived within the wind.

Her posture, its steadiness, its silence — this is what Jeju's fūdo has inscribed upon the human body. The painter read those traces.

변시지의 인물들은 자주 얼굴을 감춘다. 그것은 개인을 지우기 위해서가 아니다. 보편을 드러내기 위해서다. 이 여인은 어느 특정한 제주 여인이 아니다. 바람 속에서 살아온 모든 여인이다.
