서귀포 항구, 1975년. 처음 도착한 해.
항구는 떠나는 곳이자 돌아오는 곳이다. 변시지는 서울을 떠나 이곳으로 왔다. 그러나 이것은 도피가 아니었다. 바람이 가르쳐준 방향으로 온 것이었다.
서귀포 항구를 그리면서 화가는 처음으로 제주의 색을 보았다. 황토빛이 아직 아니었다. 다만 그 색이 올 것이라는 예감이, 바다 냄새와 함께 코끝에 닿았다.

Seogwipo harbor, 1975. The year of first arrival.
A harbor is where you leave from, and where you return to. Byun Shi-Ji left Seoul and came here. But this was not escape. He had come in the direction the wind taught.
Painting Seogwipo harbor, the painter first saw Jeju's color. Not yet ochre. But the premonition that such a color would come touched the tip of his nose, along with the smell of the sea.
