남산이 보이는 풍경

남산이 보인다. 그러나 화가의 시선은 남산을 향하지 않는다.
비원의 나무와 길, 계절의 빛이 화면을 채운다. 도시 한가운데 섬처럼 존재하는 비원 — 이 그림은 서울이라는 도시가 아니라, 그 도시 안에서 자연이 버텨내는 방식을 그린 것이다.
변시지가 이 그림을 그리던 1967년, 서울은 급격히 변하고 있었다. 그 변화 속에서 화가는 변하지 않는 것을 찾았다. 나무는 그때도 지금도 같은 자리에 있다.

Namsan is visible. Yet the painter's gaze does not turn toward it.
The trees and paths of Biwon, the seasonal light, fill the canvas. Biwon existing like an island at the city's center — this painting is not about Seoul the city, but about the way nature persists within it.
In 1967, when this was painted, Seoul was changing rapidly. Within that change, the painter sought what did not change. The trees were there then. They are there now.
