K씨가 누구인지 화가는 말하지 않았다. 그것이 이 그림의 핵심이다.
한 손은 펼쳐져 붉은 원 위에 드리워지고, 하나는 깊이 웅크려 어둠 속의 불씨를 감춘다. 말하지 못한 언어, 불러지지 못한 이름 — 그 모든 것이 침묵의 주먹 속에 고여 있다.
K는 한국인일 수도, 조선인일 수도, 또는 패전한 일본인일 수도 있다. 화가는 특정한 한 사람을 그린 것이 아니었다. 시대가 침묵하게 만든 모든 이들의 초상을 그렸다.

The painter never said who Mr. K was. That is the essence of this work.
One hand spread open upon a red circle, the other curled deep, concealing an ember in the dark. Unspoken words, unnamed names — all gathered in the fist of silence.
K could be Korean, Joseon, or perhaps a defeated Japanese. The painter did not depict one specific person. He painted the portrait of all those the age had forced into silence.
