BYUN SHIJI — Painter of the Wind Exile, Blessing, and Climatic Modernism

Life was exile. Art was grace.

When you reach Seogwipo, the wind comes out to meet you first.
Before the houses, before the people,
the wind comes and tugs at your sleeves.

Those who come for the first time find it uncomfortable;
those who have lived here long endure it;
those who have lived here a lifetime come to resemble it.

When you open the doors of the Gidang Art Museum,
what you meet first may not be a painting.
It is the wind.

Where the wind comes from and where it goes;
how a single person once stood within it
— this bearing, you will feel first.

And then you will see it:
on a field of dried-grass color,
a single figure standing for a long, long time.
