A Letter the Wind Writes

A person
bent low.

Before them
lay a square sheet of paper.

The tree
leaned to one side,
and near the horizon
a boat could be seen.

I
looked at the paper.

If that
were a letter,
whose name
would be on the first line?

Did they write one character
and stop?

Then
another.

The person
did not lift their head.

The hand
was close by.

The wind came.

One corner
of the paper lifted.

The person
seemed about to lay a hand on it,
then let it be.

What was written
could not be seen.

The wind
passed once more.

This time
the other corner lifted a little.

I
did not try to read the writing.

The person
did not lift their head either.

Only the edges of the paper
trembled lightly
each time the wind came.
