Not Looking the Same Way

Two horses
stood close together.

One
held its head up

and looked into the distance.

The other
had its head down

and was looking at its feet.

They were not looking

at the same place.

I
drew a line

along their backs.

On one side
the neck rose,

on the other
it fell.

Between the two horses
the wind passed.

Both manes
lay down the same way.

The horse with its head up

moved one forefoot.

The grass
rustled briefly.

The horse beside it

did not lift its head.

Only one ear

turned

toward the sound of the step.
