이 작품에서 배는 떠나 사라진 것이 아니다. 배는 이미 선착장에 도착했다. 그러나 사람이 타고 있어야 할 자리가 비어 있기 때문에 도착은 귀환을 완성하지 못한다.
수평선 너머의 배는 아직 누군가를 데려올 가능성을 품지만, 빈 배의 도착은 기다림의 성질을 바꾼다. 바다는 사람 대신 그의 부재를 돌려보낸다.
빈 배는 결핍된 물체이면서 동시에 증거다. 누군가 이 자리에 있었고 이제 없다는 사실을 품고 돌아온 그릇이다. 작품의 비극은 배가 돌아오지 않은 데 있지 않다. 배는 돌아왔는데 사람이 돌아오지 않았다는 데 있다.
The boat has not vanished beyond the horizon. It has arrived at the jetty, empty. Arrival is severed from homecoming because the human presence that should complete it is missing.
The returned vessel carries absence back into the visible world. Its emptiness is evidence: someone once occupied this place and no longer does.
