Seongsanpo
성산포
130×91cm. The pinnacle of Byun Shi-Ji's Jeju period.
Seongsan Ilchulbong rises between an ochre sky and the sea. Ink lines create the mountain's form; ochre accumulates above. This is the moment his language was completed.
Having learned the grammar of Western painting in Tokyo, absorbed the nature of Biwon in Seoul, endured the pressure of fūdo in Jeju — at last, a voice entirely his own. The ochre island, the ink line, the void of wind.
한국어
130×91cm.
