Ponies by the Sea

Two ponies by the sea.
No one rides them.

This is what freedom looked like:
no destination,
simply standing
in the direction of the wind.
a— The Severed Island —
"It is precisely from the place severed from the world that one draws closest to the world's essential nature. That is the paradox of jeoldo*."*
― Byun Shi-Ji, on 「Jeoldo」(1981)
Byun Shi-Ji's Jeoldo (絶島, 1981). A single island adrift on an ochre sea. A thatched cottage on the island. A pine tree leaning in the wind. It seems as though there is nothing here — and yet, here is everything.
It is precisely from the place severed from the world that one draws closest to the world's essential nature. That is the paradox of jeoldo. The island is not isolated. It is complete.
Leibniz's monad — windowless, yet reflecting the whole of the world. Bachelard's intimacy — the closed space that holds the widest dreams. Byun Shi-Ji's island is the point where these two ideas meet in ochre.
Byun Shi-Ji chose Jeju in 1975. He left the Seoul art world and withdrew from the currents of international art. He became an island himself. Jeoldo was a self-portrait.
The island is solitary. But that solitude is not a lack. On the island there is wind, there are waves, and inside the thatched cottage there is a man. Severed, yet complete — the island exists as itself.
The painter who came to Jeju
was the same.
At first,
he just stood there.
