Bando Pond
반도지
He painted Biwon for eighteen years. The same place, the same trees, the same pond. Yet not once did it become the same painting.
Bando Pond is the heart of Biwon. Land jutting like a peninsula over the water, a pavilion atop it. A place where nature created its own order. In Japanese gardens, humans shape nature. In Korean gardens, nature shapes humans — so the painter said.
That is why we are overwhelmed before this monumental 162×112cm canvas. Not by technique, but by the time contained within it.
