Girl and Fish

소녀와 밥상

First experiment after returning home. The bird's-eye view.

A fish on a low table, a pale pink skirt spreading round the girl like a bloom — the painter captured this from above, with the eye of a bird. Only someone who had fully mastered the grammar of the Japanese art world could discard it this freely.

In this painting, Byun Shi-Ji did not claim to discover something "Korean." He simply tried to see more honestly. From above rather than below. Through observation rather than explanation.

소반 위에 놓인 생선, 연분홍 치마가 소녀 주변으로 둥글게 퍼지는 장면을 화가는 새의 눈으로 포착했다. 일본 화단의 문법을 완전히 습득한 사람만이 그것을 이렇게 자유롭게 버릴 수 있었다.
