Between Two Empty Houses

An empty house on the left. An empty house on the right. Between two empty houses an old man stands. One door closed. One window open. He has been standing there a long time. Fear has its house. Hope has its house. The old man knows — whichever one he enters, the moment he steps inside, it becomes his life. Beyond the stone wall, beyond the sea, a golden light seeps in. It does not hurry. Hesitation is not weakness. It means he has known both houses well.
