Self-Portrait

자화상

A studio in Osaka. A brush at eighteen.

In the mirror, he felt a stranger. The Western suit, the stiff necktie, the hat pressed neatly down — all of it borrowed. Yet the gaze that slipped sideways was his alone. Where was he looking? Not at the finished canvas, but at a life that had not yet arrived.

To paint a self-portrait is not to explain oneself. It is to confess that one does not yet know who one is. In the moment of lifting the brush and facing the mirror, the painter confronts the being he understands least of all.

The young man in this picture will one day become a crow, a pony, an ochre-colored wind. But he does not know that yet. Not knowing was the only truth he had.
