Reminiscence

회상

It was always there — beside the stone wall, next to the thatched roof, as if it had been there before I was born. It walked beside me when I plowed the fields. When the child cried, it turned to look. When the rain came, we breathed under the same eaves. I never once held it. I never once called its name. And yet — how strange — I did not know it would hurt this much. I saw it every day, and so I forgot I was seeing it. It was so close I forgot it was there at all. That is why, when I try to paint it, the brush stops. If I paint it dark, it becomes something I do not recognize. If I do not paint it, it will be as if it never existed in this world. I hesitated a long time, then painted it faint — as though dissolving into the background, neither fully present nor fully gone. Exactly that much. No more. That is right. Memory was always that density. The thing most loved is what remains most faint. The thing that stayed longest beside you is the first to lose its outline. I did not erase it. It walked inside me on its own. That is why it cannot be seen — not with the eyes. It came in too deep. Now, every time I breathe, it breathes too.
