Autumn Scenery
비원의 가을길. 황토빛이 처음 나타나는 작품.
일본에서 배운 色의 문법을 화가는 이 길 위에서 처음으로 자기 것으로 만들었다. 황토빛 — 그것은 한국의 흙빛이다. 선조들이 밟아온 길의 색, 비원의 오솔길에 쌓인 낙엽의 색.
변시지는 이 가을길에서 자신의 색을 찾았다. 훗날 제주의 황토로 완성될 그 색의 씨앗이, 서울의 비원 가을길에서 처음 싹텄다.

The autumn path of Biwon. The first appearance of ochre in his work.
Here, on this path, the painter first made his own the grammar of color learned in Japan. Ochre — the color of Korean soil. The color of roads walked by ancestors, the color of fallen leaves on Biwon's path.
Byun Shi-Ji found his color on this autumn road. The seed of that color, later completed in Jeju's ochre earth, first sprouted on an autumn path in Seoul's Biwon.
