Jeju Sea
제주 바다
The ochre sea
tries to swallow the island.
Still the tree stands —
bent dark and low,
leaning the way
its roots remember.
The horse is not looking for grass.
It simply stands
beside the man.
The man has bowed his head.
Whether he is watching the dog,
watching the earth,
or watching nothing at all —
it is hard to say.
Far off, a small boat
remains as a point on the horizon.
Whether it has left
or is coming back,
the sea does not say.
The thatched house is low —
not to escape the wind,
but because it learned long ago
how to receive it.
Everything here has bent.
But nothing has broken.
The ochre sea
pushes against the island again today.
The island
does not give way.

섬을 삼키려 한다
그래도 나무는 서 있다
검게 휘어진 채로
뿌리가 기억하는 방향으로
말은 풀을 찾지 않는다
그냥 서 있다
사내 곁에
사내는 고개를 숙였다
개를 보는 것인지
땅을 보는 것인지
아니면 아무것도
보지 않는 것인지
저 멀리 조각배 하나
수평선에 점으로 남아 있다
떠난 것인지
돌아오는 것인지
바다는 말하지 않는다
초가는 낮다
바람을 피하려는 것이 아니라
바람을 받아들이는 법을
오래전에 배운 것이다
여기 있는 것들은
모두 휘었다
그러나 꺾이지 않았다
황토빛 바다가
오늘도 섬을 밀어붙인다

밀리지 않는다
